Globe Iron Roofing (formerly HKC Roofing) earned this year’s Innovation & Craftsmanship Award for the Guilford School Building Roof Renovation, a project that showcases the precision and expertise required for historic preservation. Built in 1914, the structure’s complex system of clay tile, low-slope roofing, and custom copper detailing required a careful balance between maintaining historic character and improving performance. Clay tiles were individually removed, inspected, and reused whenever possible, with replacements closely matched to preserve visual continuity. Modern membranes, underlayments, and structural enhancements were seamlessly integrated to improve durability without altering the building’s appearance. The result is a thoughtful restoration that honors the past while ensuring long-term performance.
